Phillips of Eureka Named IL Pork Industry’s Employee of the Year

The Illinois Pork Producers Association (IPPA) has selected the first ever Employee Spotlight of the Year, Dan Phillips. He and wife, Nicole, live near Eureka with their son Riley (14).

IPPA started the “Employee Spotlight” program to combat the labor shortage and show appreciation to hard working employees, like Dan. IPPA has highlighted 12 employees from Illinois over the course of the last year. Each employee showcases the industry in their own unique ways and we are grateful for their dedication.

Dan is not a stranger to the pork industry. He grew up on a small pig farm, starting as a young boy doing chores with his dad. In high school he helped a local farmer with cattle and pigs as well. After graduating from Western Illinois University with a degree in animal science, he was drawn back into the pork industry when he joined Leman Farms Inc.

For nearly 16 years Dan has been essential in the day-to-day success at Leman Farms as the Operations Manager. Not only does he oversee approximately 8,400 finishing spaces, but he also manages the feed mill, ensuring that all feed gets processed and delivered each day. It is his goal for everything to run smoothly and raise healthy pigs.

Dan said his job is most rewarding because he raises these pigs and sees the whole process. With his many years of experience, he has improved his system for producing a quality protein source. He truly takes pride in the work he does.

He says his biggest challenge is recruiting new people to start their career in pork production. He wishes people knew there was more to it than working in the barn all day. Which is what Dan enjoys most - the diversity in what he does each day.

Farm owner, Chad Leman, says, “We are very grateful for Dan's work ethic and diligence in helping us care for our pigs, raise crops, and grow our farm. Thank you, Dan for your 24/7 care and commitment!”

Dan and his family are involved in Cross Point Community Church and The Ardent Tiller 4-H group of Carlock. In his free time, he enjoys hunting and fishing with his son.

Dan will receive recognition at the 2022 IL Pork Expo and a monetary gift certificate in appreciation for all his hard work. Thank you to our partner Boehringer Ingelheim for making this program possible and showing gratitude to the pork industry through their generous contributions.
