Jason Propst

At Large

Jason Propst is from Cumberland County and is a 3rd generation pig farmer with a small feeder-to-finish operation. He is also a production manager for TLS Farmer Network, LLC. as well as a Swine Enterprise Specialist for FS Total Livestock Services.  Jason and his family are members of the First Baptist Church of Effingham.  He and his wife Jen have two children, Matt and Hannah.  They spend a lot of time at ball diamonds from March to October with the kids' baseball and softball programs.

Jason earned his bachelor's degree in Animal Science from the University of Illinois.

Jason states that being a part of IPPA has helped him to better understand the issues that the industry faces and how they affect his operation.  He encourages grain farmers to expand into livestock as having livestock allows for diversification of the farm and better utilization of the workforce while providing fertilizer for crops. Also, to look at the different production options and choose what best fits their farm.

How do you believe the landscape of the industry has changed over the last five years?

“It continues to get harder to generate a profit raising pigs.  For this reason, the number of pig owners continues to fall which makes it that much more important that we get the remaining producers involved in sharing the benefits of raising pigs.”
